History

Howstrake Camp opened by Liverpool born Joeseph Cunningham as an all male tented village. The camp is regarded as Britain's first purpose built holiday camp.

In 1904 following damage and loss of equipment during storms the previous winter, Joeseph acquired 5 acres of land near Victoria Road overlooking Douglas Bay and opened Cunningham's Camp, selling Howsdrake Camp to .....

Eventually the tents were replaced by permanent buildings.

During World War 2 the camp was used by the Royal Navy.

Rail Connection

One means of access to the camp was via the Manx Electric Railway. Passengers would alight the tram then pass under the tracks and road by means of stairs and a tunnel that emerged near the main building.
