Howstrake Camp opened by Liverpool born Joeseph Cunningham as an all male tented village. The camp is regarded as Britain's first purpose built holiday camp.

Eventually the tents were replaced by permanent buildings.

One means of access to the camp was via the Manx Electric Railway. Passengers would alight the tram then pass under the tracks and road by means of stairs and a tunnel that emerged near the main building.
