History

A plot of land alongside North Quay was purchased in 1759 by Ulster born wine and spirits merchant Robert Black who was aware of duty differences between the island and the UK and therefore used to import goods to the island before sending them on to the UK.

When the UK took control of the island following the 1765 Act of Revestment, ownwership of the property passed on to Dr. Curphy and it was briefly the residence of former Deemster Peter John Heywood.

In 1793 it was acquired by the 4th Duke of Athol who used it as his residence during the building of the Castle Mona.

In 1833 the building become Customs House.

By 1862 it became a public house for the first time, named the Old Custom House Inn.

Future Plans

The Douglas Hotel and it's neighbouring properties, the Clarendon, and the former Isle of Man Farmers animal and pet shop are awaiting planning permission to be redeveloped as a new pub, possible micro-brewery and a new convenience store with upper floors converted into flats.
