Beckwith’s Mine
From ManxWiki
Beckwith's Mine is located above Glen Rushen on the western slopes of South Barrule, The mine was first worked around 1839 and produced lead ore before being closed in 1877.
The main shaft was 1,100 feet deep, the bottom of which was considerably below sea level. During operations, about 50,000 tons of lead-ore worth about three quarters of a million pounds was mined.
Although the mines have long been closed and attacked by nature and irrisponsible visitors, impressive ruins of the mine buildings and chimney can still be seen.
It should be noted that much of the remains are unstable and a number of overgrown dips similar to craters are former air shafts and should NOT be walked upon.
